The author analyzed 15 cases of cancer of the maxillary sinus which were confirmed histopathologially.
9 patients were male and 6 patients were female. The mean age was 53.4 years with a range of 25 to 73 years of age. The most common complaints were nasal obstruction, nasal obstruction, nasal discharge headache, epistaxis, cheek swelling or mass, and cheek pain. The average duration of symptoms prior to diagnosis was 6.1 months. The predominant histological type was squamous cell carcinoma. All patients were staged according to the AJC staging system. My series showed two T₂ cases, six T₃ cases, and seven T₄ cases. One patient had a metastatic cervical node at the time of diagnosis. Two paitents were treated with surgery alone and seven patients were treated with the combined therapy of surgery and postoperative radiation. Continuous evaluation of the treatment program and a follow-up check-up are needed to develop the most effective treatment.
